Fish and lentil curry

Dailot diya mas or fish and lentil curry does not sound so cool but it is one of the easiest fish curry recipe of Assamese cuisine. When making fish and lentil curry the most important thing is the use of souring agents.  The lentil curry must be sour when you make fish lentil curry. The procedure of cooking is the same in making different fish and lentil curries with different souring agents. Here in this recipe I am using modhuxulung leaves and roselle. Modhuxulung is a plant whose leaves are used in cooking in Assamese cuisine.  It has a sour taste and therefor used in making Assamese masor tenga or Assamese sour fish curry. Roselle has a wide use in Assamese cuisine.  Both it's leaves and fruits are used to make sour fish curries. In this sour fish curry recipe I am using roselle fruit together with modhuxulung as the souring agent.

  • 2 pieces of fish (any) 
  • 1 bunch modhuxulung leaves (optional) 
  • 4 - 5 mature roselle fruits 
  • 2 tbsp red lentil 
  • 1/2 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • 1/2 + 1/2 tsp turmeric powder 
  • 2 green chillies chopped 
  • 2 tbsp oil 
  • Salt to taste 
  1. Here you can use any fish.  I'm using bhangan fish. Clean the fishes and throw it's intestine part. Wash under running water. 
  2. Rub fish pieces with 1/2 tsp of turmeric and salt. 
  3. In a pan heat oil. Fry fish pieces and keep aside. Don't throw the remaining oil. 
  4. In the meantime rinse red lentils. 
  5. Break off the modhuxulung leaves on its base. Wash and chop the leaves. 
  6. In a large bowl soak the roselle fruits in water for sometimes. There may be bugs inside the fruit. So this way by soaking in water the bugs will come out. Now wash the roselle fruits under running water. 
  7. In a pressure cooker take red lentils , chopped green chillies, chopped modhuxulung leaves and roselle fruits.
  8. Add 1 cup of water. Close the lid and in high heat cook for two whistles. 
  9. Now heat the remaining oil  and add fenugreek seed.
  10. When crackling add turmeric powder. 
  11. Pour everything from the cooker. 
  12. Bring to boil. 
  13. Add salt 
  14. Add fish pieces. 
  15. Add 1/2 cup more water if required. 
  16. Cook for few minutes on high heat. 
  17. Remove from heat and serve hot with rice.
