Brinjal sabzi with sesame seeds

Brinjal sabzi with sesame seeds is a very tasty dish.  Its taste is little sweet and little sour.  Tamarind makes it sour and jaggery makes it sweet. Its a side dish generally served with plain rice.


  • 1 big brinjal or eggplant
  • 1 potato
  • 1 tbsp tamarind pulp
  • 1 small piece of jaggery
  •  2 tbsp black sesame seeds
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp garam masala
  • powder
  • 1/3 tsp panch phoron
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • salt to taste


  1. Make slices of the brinjal or eggplant.  Soak in salty water for few minutes.  Drain and keep aside.
  2. Peel the potato.  Make equal sized slices as brinjal.
  3. In medium heat roast sesame seeds in a pan. In a grinder make a paste by adding some water.
  4. In a pan heat oil. Add panch phoron. When crackling add potato slices.  Stir and add turmeric,  cumin and red chilli powder.  Mix well and cook for few minutes.  Cover the pan. Stir occasionally.
  5. Add salt and brinjal or eggplant slices. Stir and add tamarind pulp and jaggery. Add some water. Mix well and cover the pan. Cook till potato and brinjal slices become soft.
  6. Add garam masala. Cook for 2 minutes.  Remove from heat. Serve as a side dish with rice.
